4. PUTTING AT PEBBLE BEACH
Yanni was playing golf at Pebble Beach. On
the first green, she was looking over her putt.
She started from a point that was exactly
halfway between her ball and the hole. First
she walked a distance of 18 yards towards
and past the hole. Then she turned around
and walked back a total of 32 yards towards
and past her ball. Finally she turned around
again and walked 3 yards to her ball.
What was the distance between her ball
and the hole?
(Note: Everything in this problem takes place
in one straight line that runs between the ball
and the hole, and past the ball on one side
and past the hole on the other side.)

let's define any distance towards and beyond the hole as positive, and any distance away from the hole in the direction of the ball as negative.

x + 18 - 32 + 3 = ball to hole = 2x

x - 11 = 2x

-11 = x

let's use now the absolute value for the absolute distance :

the point right in the middle between ball and hole = |x| = |-11| = 11 yards from the hole.

so, the distance of ball to hole = |2x| = |-22| = 22 yards.
