When you are distributing you are just multiplying the number outside of the parenthesis with the numbers inside the parenthesis.
2(m + 2) = 22
2 x m + 2 x 2 = 22
2m + 4 = 22
Subtract 4 on both sides:
2m = 18
Divide 2 on both sides:
18/ 2 = 9
So your answer is 9.
