In case of elevators we have a motor attached to a pulley, which has a counterweight on one side and an elevator car on the other side. Now let's say the elevator car weighs 100 kg and the counterweight weighs 150 kg. Why doesn't the elevator car just shoot up? What is preventing this from happening?
